Commerson
A surprisingly inventive seafood spot hiding behind an unassuming facade on La Brea.

From the outside, Commerson doesn’t exactly scream destination dining. Nestled at the base of a mixed-use building near the perpetual construction zone of La Brea and Wilshire, its minimalist black-and-white signage could easily pass for a generic coffee chain or boutique shop. But step inside and order a few plates, and you’ll quickly realize this unassuming seafood restaurant is one of Mid-Wilshire’s best-kept secrets.
The menu leans into seafood-forward comfort food with creative twists that consistently deliver. The salmon poke arrives not as the tired bowl you’ve seen everywhere, but as an elegant tower of fresh fish and creamy avocado swimming in bright yuzu. The sweet potato agnolotti is a revelation—brown butter-kissed pasta pillows studded with cranberries and pistachios that taste like the coziest fall day imaginable. But the real showstopper is the shrimp and chorizo burger. What sounds like a late-night sports bar mistake turns out to be the best thing on the menu: sweet, spicy, savory, and utterly addictive.
The space itself embraces its suburban-adjacent location with modern touches, pendant lighting, and flat screens for catching a game. Validated parking sweetens the deal considerably. It’s comfortable without being memorable, which is fine because the food does all the heavy lifting here.
Whether you’re looking for a low-key date spot, a place to catch the game with decent food, or just want to escape the chaos of La Brea construction for an hour, Commerson rewards those who look past its forgettable exterior. Sometimes the most interesting restaurants are the ones you’d never notice walking by.
