Bludso's

Los Angeles might never be confused with Texas when it comes to barbecue, but that doesn’t mean you can’t find the real deal here. Bludso’s on La Brea proves that point emphatically. Kevin Bludso built his reputation slinging smoked meats out of a tiny window in Compton before bringing his operation north to this spacious Fairfax location, partnering with the Golden State team to create a spot that works equally well for a casual date or a rowdy birthday celebration.

The menu is designed for sharing, and you should absolutely take advantage of that. The brisket is the undisputed star—gorgeously charred with a deep smoke ring and meat so tender it practically falls apart. But don’t sleep on the pork ribs, which have a devoted following and frequently sell out before the dinner rush. The hot links deliver a satisfying crunch and just enough heat, while sides like the potato salad and mac and cheese could almost stand on their own as a meal.

What makes Bludso’s special is that despite the upgrade in surroundings from its Compton origins, the food stayed true to its roots. This isn’t BBQ that’s been sanitized for a Melrose crowd—it’s the real thing, served on trays piled high with glistening meat. The casual vibe means you can roll up in whatever you’re wearing and nobody will bat an eye as you work your way through a mountain of ribs.

Come hungry, order way too much food, and save room for the peach cobbler. About eighteen bucks can get you enough brisket, ribs, and sides to feed a small army, making this one of the best bang-for-your-buck meals in the neighborhood. Whether you’re a BBQ purist or just someone who appreciates expertly smoked meat, Bludso’s delivers.
