A-Frame has undergone quite the transformation. What started as a somewhat confused fine-dining-meets-casual concept from chef Roy Choi has evolved into the full-on Hawaiian luau experience it was destined to become. The Culver City restaurant now embraces its tiki bar aesthetic wholeheartedly, with a revamped interior that matches the laid-back island vibes of its new menu direction.

The food here is all about Hawaiian and Polynesian comfort classics done right. The loco moco stands out as potentially the best version in Los Angeles—the combination of hamburger, rice, and fried eggs is elevated by a curry gravy that takes it beyond the ordinary. The cracklin beer can chicken lives up to its name with an audibly crispy exterior, while the O.G. ribs with hoisin chile sauce are worth timing your visit around luau hour for the half-price deal.

What makes A-Frame work so well now is its versatility. Whether you’re celebrating a birthday with a big group, bringing the parents for dinner, enjoying brunch on the patio, or starting a first date, the restaurant handles every occasion with equal ease. The casual tiki atmosphere keeps things relaxed while the food quality keeps things memorable.

Save room for dessert—the Chu Don’t Know Mang (arguably the best-named item on any menu) features pound cake paired with malted chocolate milk that you’ll want by the gallon. The malasada bites with lemon custard filling make a perfect finish to a meal that captures everything great about island dining right in the heart of LA.
