Teriyaki Sauce

How to Make the Best Teriyaki Sauce

This homemade teriyaki sauce is the perfect balance of sweet, savory, and slightly spicy—and it comes together in just 10 minutes. Forget the bottled stuff with its lengthy ingredient list; this version uses simple pantry staples to create a rich, glossy sauce that rivals any restaurant.

What makes this teriyaki sauce so versatile is how easily it adapts to different dietary needs. Swap honey for maple syrup to make it vegan, or use Braggs Liquid Aminos instead of soy sauce for a gluten-free option. The fresh garlic and ginger give it a vibrant, aromatic quality that store-bought versions simply can’t match.

Use this sauce as a marinade for chicken, salmon, or tofu, toss it with stir-fried vegetables, or serve it as a dipping sauce for spring rolls and dumplings. Once you try making teriyaki sauce from scratch, you’ll never go back to the bottled kind.

Instructions

Make the Sauce

  1. In a sauce pan, whisk together soy sauce (or Braggs), rice vinegar, honey, sesame oil, garlic, ginger, and red pepper flakes. Heat on medium low until it slowly simmers.
  2. Whisk water and cornstarch together in a small bowl and whisk into the simmering sauce mixture.
  3. Allow to just boil and remove from heat. The sauce will thicken as it cools.

Notes

  • For a vegan version, use maple syrup instead of honey.
  • Use Braggs Liquid Aminos or tamari for a gluten-free option.
  • Adjust the red pepper flakes to taste—use less for a milder sauce or more for extra heat.
  • Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
