Jamu (Turmeric Ginger Juice)

How to Make the Best Jamu (Turmeric Ginger Juice)

Jamu is a traditional Indonesian tonic that has been enjoyed for centuries for its health-promoting properties. This vibrant golden drink combines the earthy warmth of fresh turmeric with the spicy kick of ginger, balanced by a touch of honey and bright citrus. The addition of black pepper isn’t just for flavor—it actually helps your body absorb the beneficial compounds in turmeric.

Making jamu at home is surprisingly simple, whether you use a blender or a juicer. The blender method is more accessible and works well for most home cooks, while juicing produces a smoother, more concentrated result. Either way, you’ll end up with a refreshing, wellness-boosting beverage that you can enjoy cold on a hot day or warmed up as a soothing tea.

This anti-inflammatory drink has become popular worldwide for good reason. It’s naturally low in calories, packed with beneficial compounds, and absolutely delicious. Once you try homemade jamu, you’ll understand why this Balinese tradition has stood the test of time.

Instructions

Blender Method

  1. Slice the turmeric and ginger into thin disks (leave skin on) and place in a blender with 2 cups water.
  2. Blend for about 1 minute until smooth.
  3. Let stand for 5 minutes, then strain into a bowl.
  4. Pour into a quart jar and add the remaining 2 cups of water.
  5. Stir in the black pepper, honey, and lemon juice, adjusting to taste.

Juicer Method

  1. Juice the whole turmeric and ginger roots. You should end up with about 1 cup of golden liquid.
  2. Add a little water to the juicer to extract more of the juice.
  3. Place in a quart jar or pitcher and fill with water.
  4. Add black pepper, honey, and lemon juice. Adjust to taste.

Notes

  • No need to peel the turmeric or ginger roots—just give them a good rinse.
  • Jamu can be served chilled over ice or warmed like tea.
  • Turmeric will stain surfaces and clothing, so handle with care.
  • Store in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
