Iceberg Lettuce Salad

How to Make the Best Iceberg Lettuce Salad

This classic iceberg lettuce salad is the ultimate crowd-pleaser for summer gatherings. The crisp, refreshing wedges of iceberg lettuce serve as the perfect canvas for a creamy dressing and an array of fresh toppings. It’s simple, elegant, and incredibly satisfying on a hot day.

What makes this wedge salad so special is its versatility and make-ahead potential. You can prepare the lettuce wedges and arrange them on a platter with all the toppings hours before your guests arrive—just keep it covered in the refrigerator. The chilled platter will actually help keep everything crisp and cool longer, which is especially handy for outdoor entertaining.

The combination of creamy avocado, crunchy pumpkin seeds, peppery radishes, and fresh herbs creates a beautiful balance of textures and flavors. Finish with a drizzle of your favorite creamy dressing and a shower of lemon zest for a restaurant-worthy presentation that takes just 30 minutes to prepare.

Instructions

Prepare the Salad

  1. Prepare your dressing of choice and refrigerate it.
  2. Peel off any wilted outer layers from the lettuce and cut any discolored areas off the stem, preserving as much of the stem as possible (this keeps the wedge from falling apart). Cut the lettuce in half through the stem end. Then in half again. Then, one more time to create 8 wedges.
  3. Place the wedges on a platter, and top with sliced cucumber, radishes, avocado and red onions. At this point, you could cover and refrigerate for later. Chilling the salad on the platter will help keep it cooler longer.
  4. When ready to serve, spoon some dressing over the top, leaving extra on the side. Scatter with the pumpkin seeds and fresh herbs. Season with fresh-cracked pepper. Zest a lemon right over the salad for a fresh aroma. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • Choose a heavy head of iceberg lettuce for the crispest wedges.
  • This salad can be prepped ahead and refrigerated until ready to serve.
  • Add the dressing just before serving to keep the lettuce crisp.
