How to Make the Best How to Cook Basmati Rice
Basmati rice is a staple of Indian cuisine, known for its delicate aroma and fluffy texture when cooked properly. This straightforward recipe teaches you the exact technique used in Indian kitchens to achieve perfectly cooked grains every time. The key lies in rinsing the rice beforehand and cooking it uncovered in boiling water, allowing each grain to remain separate and tender.
The optional tempering oil is what takes this simple side dish to the next level. By infusing ghee or oil with aromatic seeds, curry leaves, and spices, you create an incredibly fragrant topping that elevates the rice from plain to exceptional. The mustard seeds crackle and pop as they hit the hot oil, releasing their nutty flavor throughout. This technique is traditional in South Indian cooking and transforms basmati rice into a sophisticated accompaniment to curries, dals, and other Indian dishes.
Whether you choose to keep it simple or add the traditional tempering, you’ll have fluffy, perfect basmati rice that rivals restaurant quality. This recipe is also vegan-friendly if you substitute the ghee with coconut oil, making it a versatile side dish for any meal.
