How to Make the Best Celery Stir Fry
This celery stir fry proves that humble celery can be the star of a delicious meal. Often overlooked as just a supporting ingredient, celery takes center stage in this quick Chinese-inspired dish, offering a satisfying crunch and fresh flavor that pairs beautifully with a savory, umami-rich sauce.
The combination of crispy tempeh and tender-crisp celery creates wonderful texture contrasts, while the ginger and garlic bring aromatic depth to every bite. This recipe is incredibly versatile—swap the tempeh for ground chicken, turkey, or beef if you prefer, or keep it plant-based for a vegan-friendly weeknight dinner.
Ready in just 35 minutes, this celery stir fry is perfect for busy weeknights when you want something healthy and flavorful without spending hours in the kitchen. Serve it over fluffy jasmine rice and don’t forget the toasted cashews and sesame seeds for that perfect finishing touch.

Instructions
Make the Sauce
- In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, sherry vinegar, sesame oil, molasses, sugar, garlic, red pepper flakes, white pepper, and cornstarch. Set aside.
Prepare the Tempeh
- Cut or crumble tempeh into a large pan. Add water and bring to a boil, then simmer over medium heat until all the water is absorbed, about 5 minutes. Steaming helps mellow the pungency of tempeh.
- Once the water has evaporated, add oil and sauté until brown and crisp, about 8 minutes. Set tempeh aside.
Cook the Stir-Fry
- Over medium-high heat, sauté the onions for about 3 minutes.
- Add the celery, ginger, and garlic and stir for about 2 minutes. You want the celery to be just slightly tender but still quite crisp.
- Add the tempeh crumble and the sauce. Stir together until sauce is thickened, 1-2 minutes.
- Serve over jasmine rice and garnish with toasted cashews, sesame seeds, and scallions.
Notes
- If using ground meat instead of tempeh, skip the steaming step. Simply brown the meat in oil until cooked through.
- For extra crunch, add the celery leaves as a garnish.
- This stir-fry is naturally vegan and gluten-free when using tamari or liquid aminos.
